Aging Gracefully

Aging should be graceful, full of grace
Grace that lives with a gratitude for life, with all its frailties.
Accepting without acquiescing.

How else can we show our grands and great-grands how we lived.
They may appreciate our treasures, or not, but they will remember
how we lived,
What we shared,
How we loved,
Gracefully.

Dylan Thomas admonished,
“Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night”
Saying we should “burn and rage at close of day.”
For some of us, that may be the ending we choose.

But having a choice, I chose to live in God’s grace.
To welcome the fullness of life,
To not quit too soon,
To appreciate the sunrise
Knowing sunset follows.
To give and get a plethora of hugs,
To watch a baby smile and have her many “firsts.”
To know what lies ahead will be revealed in God’s time
And to find peace and comfort in that knowledge.

None of this is about makeup or wrinkles,
It isn’t even about diet, exercise and doctor visits.
It is about living in the arms of love in every day
and in every way.

Then we live in grace.
Obtaining God’s grace is restorative,
It is whole as well as holy.
Live in His Grace!
